Be honest and simply say "We aren't quite sure what to do." After all it's true. Step 2. Find out what the student already knows. Borrow materials from several different grade levels ahead and admin some quick quizes. Step 3. Find out how quickly the student can progress. Based on step 2, send a book home and ask the student to play around with whatever looks interesting. If the student proves to be self-motivated, the teacher should get out of the way (as in Lead, Follow, or Get out of the way.) If the student is bright but not self motivated, then leadership is appropriate.
