From: christina jurgens <christinajurgens@yahoo.com> To: Teacher2Teacher Public Discussion Date: 2006030515:49:02 Subject: tessellations and symmetry -- 4th grade Hi, I have enjoyed reading your discussion and want to recommend a relevant chapter of an excellent book, "Creative Mathematics: Exploring Children's Understanding" by Rena Upitis, Eileen Phillips and William Higginson. Chapter 2, "Tessellations," offers some wonderful ideas for lessons with ceramic tiles, dot grids, tesselating patterns on silk cards, and inventing notations for tesselating patterns -- all appropriate for 3-4 grades and adaptable up and down. The book was published in 1997 by Routledge. Best wishes, Christina
