Note that this algorithm just keeps getting a bigger square out of the rectangle represented by (x+y)(x+y)=x^2 + 2*x*y + y^2. I have a book by J.E. Thompson, "Mathematics for Self Study, Arithmetic" written 1931 and re-issued in the 40's that explains the square root and cube root algorithm.
