Some students just learn in a different mode than the standard one. We must try to realize this when presenting a math lesson to the class. Some need to illustrate their work in order to "see" what the problem is asking of them, some need to underline with colored ink, some need to have the key words explained or written down in their notes, some need extra time to complete the assignment. It is challenging for the teacher, but can one imagine how stressful it is for the student who is afraid of math!!!
