I have a Grade Three student who struggles with basic addition and subtraction. He is using his fingers for simple operations like 5 + 2. He is frustrated trying to memorize basic math facts. However, the same child can perform three-figure addition in his head. This includes carrying numbers. He also glanced at the window blinds and asked, "What's 2 times 60?" He'd calculated the number of holes in the slats of the window blinds. What could explain this situation?
