Subject: Negative numbers

Teachers in the lower grades often tell the students that "you can't take 8
from 7" for example. I am trying to find the best way to explain to a
student who has not learned about negative numbers yet that although they
have not learned it yet, you actually can take 8 from 7. Any ideas or
direction on this??? Thanks!!
