There is an excellent resource that started out as an NSF project called the Connected Mathematics Project, which does exactly what you are requesting. See http://www.mth.msu.edu/cmp/ One activity involves having each student write the number of the letters in their first name on a post-it note. The students then organize the data and look for things like mean, median and mode. You can build histograms and box plots, too. The information references what the largest name in the world is and poses questions like what do you think the most common last name is in the US? in the world?
