Subject: Explaining the why's of multiplication place values

I need to explain why when multiplying a 3 digit number by another 3 digit
number we keep moving over a place - for example:

      123
     x123
   ------
      369
     246
   123

Thanks for your help.  I can't seem to put it into words.
