Subject: Explaining the relationship between the degree of a function and its shape

I have to teach a class on the relationship between the degree of a polynomial
function and its general shape. (ie cubic with positive x^3 term is infinite
when x->inf.) I'm looking for a neat way of teaching this concept. Any ideas
or comments?
