You might want to look around at other textbooks. It would be great to have the best of both worlds that comprise some traditional ideas (which Houghton- M goes way over board on) and new ideas like UCSMP. I recommend South- Western's Algebra series. Check out their web site. They have chat groups and support through internet, too! math.swep.com. -Claudia, for the Teacher2Teacher service
