The MAA is planning four professional development courses to
assist collegiate mathematics faculty to stay abreast of development and
advances in mathematics and in mathematics education.
- "Using Cooperative Learning" will be run by Ed Dubinsky (Purdue

University), David Mathews (Central Michigan University), and Sr. Barbara
Reynolds (Cardinal Stritch College, visiting Brown University). They have
all been instructors in the Cooperative Learning in Undergraduate Education
(CLUME) summer workshops on this subject. The first course is scheduled
for spring '97, with subsequent courses during the summer.
- "Learning About Learning and Teaching" is intended for graduate
students, and will be run by Nancy Hagelgans of Ursinus College.
- "Teaching Developmental Mathematics" will be headed by Bonnie Gold,
Wabash College.
- "Integrating Applications into Undergraduate Instruction", will be run
by a task force headed by Martha Segal, Towson State University.
Special support for these activities will be provided by Jon Scott
(Montgomery College), a visiting mathematician at the MAA
headquarters. Ideas for other professional development activities should
