    Chance and Data in the News - The Mercury/University of Tasmania
    Newspaper articles collected from the Tasmanian (Australia) metropolitan daily newspaper, The Mercury, to represent the five areas of the Chance and Data curriculum (Data Collection and Sampling, Data Representation, Chance and Basic Probability, Data Reduction, and Inference), and aspects of numeracy throughout mathematics. Each section contains introductory questions, and each article is followed by a short discussion. Many articles can be associated with more than one part of the curriculum.     Exploring Data - Rex Boggs, Education Queensland
    A website with activities, worksheets, overhead transparency masters, datasets, and assessment to support data exploration. It also contains an extensive collection of articles designed to enhance the statistics knowledge of the teacher. A resources page gives a select list of resources to support introductory statistics, including texts, websites, datasets, java applets, and mailing lists. The majority of the resources are available as web pages and as Word 2.0 documents.     A collection of handouts for a two-week summer workshop entitled 'Geometry and the Imagination', led by John Conway, Peter Doyle, Jane Gilman and Bill Thurston at the Geometry Center in Minneapolis, June 17-28, 1991. The workshop was based on a course taught twice before at Princeton. more>>

    GirlTECH - Cynthia Lanius; Center for Research on Parallel Computation (CRPC)
    GirlTECH is a teacher training and student council program that encourages young women to pursue careers in mathematics and science, offering intensive technology training to explore innovative teaching strategies for gender equity in the classroom through a training period at The Rice School and Rice University in Houston, Texas. GirlTECH lesson plans were designed by participating teachers to take full advantage of Internet resources and teach standard concepts in mathematics and sciences in new and exciting ways.     Internet Lessons - Susan Boone; GirlTECH '95, CRPC, RUSMP
    Lessons with an Internet component, developed for GirlTECH'95, a program funded by CRPC Rice University and the RUSMP. A Functional Housing Market asks students to search the Internet for housing prices and compare them to the area of a house, thus deriving a linear equation. The Internet Pizza Server lets students order pizzas, calculating their area and determine the better buy. With Pop Clock, students look at the census site, study data and make predictions on future populations. Find the mean and median speeds for racers in the INDY 500.
