I would like some assistance with a subset of our ratio and proportion unit. Although the students are able to master the numerical calculations of ratio and proportion, they seem unable to grasp the more tangible concept of scale drawing. Despite having used a variety of maps over the past few years, the children have a very difficult time understanding this abstraction.

The methods I have used, with limited success, are:

  1. Reviewing equal fractions;
  2. Teaching the mathematics, concepts, and applications of ratio;
  3. Teaching the mathematics, concepts, and applications of proportion;
  4. Teaching the mathematics, concepts, and applications of similar polygons;
  5. Teaching the mathematics, concepts, and applications of similar triangles;
  6. Utilizing various sized grid graph paper, having students draw polygons with the same numerical sides and comparing the sizes of each finished shape;
  7. Utilizing one size grid graph paper, having students draw similar polygons scaled larger and smaller, and compare;
  8. Forming discussion groups to share their findings, and discussing how and why scale drawing is useful;
  9. Utilizing maps, blueprints, and globes.
Any suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
