Objective: Students will learn to find all of the different ways to build a hexagon.

Manipulative Activity: Distribute hexagonal shapes to pairs of students. Ask students to name and describe the shape. Distribute three rhombuses, two trapezoids, and six triangles to each pair of students and have them find all the different ways to put the shapes together to make a hexagon. Have students draw and color one example on paper.

Technology Activity: Students will use a pattern block applet written by Jacobo Bulaevsky to build hexagons using rhombuses, trapezoids, and triangles.

Have students go to Building Shapes.

Paper/Pencil Activity: Depending on the level of your students, you can have them complete this activity individually or with assistance. Here are some possible activities:

  1. Print this page of hexagons divided into triangles or this one of hexagons without dividers to use for the activity.
  2. Students color the hexagons to show how other shapes were combined to make hexagons.
  3. Students identify signs in the neighborhood.
  4. Students design a sign using a hexagon.
