Objective: Students will learn to identify the tangram shapes.
Manipulative Activity: Distribute a set of tangrams to each student or pair of students. Allow time for free exploration. Display one of the triangles on the overhead projector. Ask students to hold up the same shape. Ask students what they know about the shape. Record student responses. Follow the same procedure for the square and parallelogram.
Technology Activity: Students will use the Tangrams applet from the National Library of Virtual Mathematics Manipulatives. Depending on the availability of computers for your students, this activity could be done individually, with partners, in groups, or as a class.
Have students go to Describing Tangrams.
Paper/Pencil Activity: Students trace the tangrams on paper. Exchange papers with a partner. Match the tangrams with the shapes drawn on paper.
