Coastal Erosion

How does your problem change when you are dealing with beach erosion instead of down-cutting in a river bed?

1. Is the problem more difficult or mathematically easier to solve?

2. When you are determining preventative measures, why is surface area important to you?

We have measured the erosion in a 100 yd. sample beach. The above sketch is a cross-section of the beach. The solid line represents the "before" and the dotted line represents the "after erosion. How much soil has been displaced?
