Description In this interactive session, each presenter will provide a short (10 min) overview of findings about different forms of collaboration that contributed to the development and use of ESCOT Problems of the Week (EPoWS). Following this, session participants will draw on the multiple forms of collaboration detailed in this project to identify design principles for problem and project development.

GOAL: to assist teachers find and use quality software for teaching mathematics effectively.

  1. Look at the role of revision and reflection in the development of mathematical thinking.
  2. Examine the characteristics of problems and online environments that encourage reflection.
  3. Discuss strategies for increasing reflection that leads to improved problem-solving.

Description The Math Forum's Problems of the Week have an explicit expectation to encourage revision and reflection on the solution process through the use of non-routine problems. We will examine the results of this effort, discussing the role that reflection plays in mathematical thinking and strategies for encouraging its use.

Description: Participants will engage in hands-on use of interactive technology (e.g. Java applets, graphing calculator programs/apps) presented from a list of exemplary tools catalogued in the Math Forum's Math Tools digital library. Discussion of making the most of the Math Tools site will focus participants' ideas about using technology tools for effective learning for all students.

  1. Show our district's Sketchpad Implementation Center, including some of the Sketchpad activities that have been chosen, adapted, aligned to Standards, and developed for our various courses and corresponding textbooks.
  2. Review the process that we went through in developing this resource.
  3. Discuss the learning of math, teaching, and technology that we did as teachers and how that is affecting our students.

Description: Our high school had used Sketchpad in geometry courses, but our district's goal was to make Sketchpad a larger part of our students' math experience, starting in middle school. We'll share the process and results of our teachers' work with the Math Forum in developing resources to meet this goal.

Goals:
  1. Discuss the characteristics of Internet-based problem-solving that create relatively unique opportunities for all students to focus on, and be valued for, their mathematical thinking.
  2. Consider ways in which Internet problem services can enhance instruction differently for three groups of students: those performing at grade level, those performing below it, or those performing above it.
  3. Look at work submitted to the Math Forum's Problems of the Week by students at all points of the learning spectrum and review the research on the development of autonomy, strategy use, and connectedness in mathematics problem-solving.

Description: The Math Forum's Problems of the Week give all students the opportunity to develop problem solving and communication skills. Participants will explore interesting math problems, and see how students with disabilities, or poor performance, or exceptional development succeed in this online, non-routine problem context.
