Description Online collaboration to solve non-routine mathematical problems can be a rich source from which students' conceptual strengths and weaknesses can be revealed, and where the unique features of their problem-solving methods can be observed. Learn and discuss with us assessment methods used to analyze the chat records of middle and high school students who have participated in Virtual Math Teams (VMT), a research program of The Math Forum @ Drexel.

Participants in this session will explore and discuss in particular the assessment implications of VMT research, starting from the specially designed mathematics problems used and using the chat records as a source of information about students' conceptual strengths and weaknesses, in addition to serve to uncover the unique features of the participants' problem-solving methods.

Goals: Participants will learn to use the Math Forum web site as a resource, with emphasis on:
  1. The Problems of the Week as a fun and interesting way to assess problem solving and communication skills.
  2. Ask Dr. Math as a support for development of questioning strategies and math information for teachers and students from K through college. Challenge your students to explore and research new topics.
  3. The Math Tools Digital Library as a place to find online resources that bring illustrative instructional technologies into the classroom and challenge students to learn to investigate mathematical concepts and construct understandings.

Description The wide range of Math Forum resources, from mentoring programs to interactive software and research materials, enable students and teachers to pursue inquiry. The record of these activities illustrates the development of effective questioning and problem-solving strategies. Learn to find useful technology, pose strong questions, and use non-routine, open-ended problems.


Online Mentoring Project Prepares Future Teachers to Foster Problem Solvers

  2. Discuss how the mentoring process of The Math Forum's Problem of the Week program scaffolds the development of student problem solving and communication skills in mathematics.
  3. Present the perspective of a teacher educator actively involved in the Online Mentoring Program.
  4. Introduce additional features of The Math Forum @ Drexel that support teacher education.

Description We will discuss the Math Forum's Online Mentoring Project, which prepares pre-service teachers to assess and strengthen children's problem solving and communication skills by mentoring submitters to the Problem of the Week. Learn how this program enhances the math education course and motivates both mentors and students.

  1. Introduce participants to a variety of freely-accessible technology-based Problems of the Week (tPoWs) in the Math Forum's Math Tools digital library.
  2. Lead participants through the online writing process linking problem-solving with math communication.
  3. Discuss how technology can support an inquiry orientation and provide a unique assessment window on student problem-solving.
  4. Hear accounts from teachers who have used tPoWs in their classrooms with their students.

Description Participants explore technology problems (tPoWs) modeled after the Math Forum's Problems of the Week - paper/pencil activities enhanced by concrete and virtual manipulatives (Java applet, JavaSketchpad, Flash, Fathom, spreadsheets, etc.). We'll discuss how the tPoW process helps students learn to write mathematics and supports problem-solving assessment for both students and teachers.

Goals: Participants will:
  1. Solve and examine effective problems for constructed response.
  2. Analyze student constructed responses to determine what each student does and does not seem to understand.
  3. Discuss how using a rubric can guide instruction and help to support communication in the math classroom.

Description Constructed response problems give unique insight into students' mathematical understanding. A rubric that addresses problem solving and communication also provides structure for assessing student work and driving instruction. We'll work with submissions to the Math Forum's Problems of the Week, discuss scaffolding of student problem solving, and design instructional responses.
