Goals:
- Explore ways that technology enhances problem solving by providing a medium for the solving process as well as for communicating results.
- Demonstrate how students can use commonly available software applications to develop and present their mathematical thinking.
- Introduce teachers to The Math Forum's Math Tools, a free service for locating appropriate web applets that support problem solving.
- Show how pre-service teachers incorporate technology tools in their problem solving course.
Description: Technology is a powerful medium for problem solving. Learn how commonly available software and Web applets can uncover mathematics through visualization and pattern discovery and help students communicate their results and thinking effectively.

Description: Explore good problems tested with teachers and students and the teaching strategies that help students build algebraic reasoning from their calculations and concrete representations. Learn to use a free, grant-funded online teacher support program.
- Introduce participants to good problems for rich explorations that expose the algebraic reasoning in solution strategies.
- Demonstrate the use of student work to ground teachers' preparation for helping a wide range of students to develop their algebraic reasoning.
- Connect participants to a supporting online community and related grant-funded professional development.
- Illustrate the deep pedagogical knowledge that is needed for informed instruction of common topics.

Goals:
- View examples of student work submitted to the Technology Problems of the Week where students have communicated the process they have used to solve the problem.
- Examine the various representations used (symbols, graphs, tables, models) and discuss how each might address a different learning style.
- Discuss how communication and technology (both highlights of the tPoW process) are powerful tools to increase mathematical understanding.
Description: Technology Problems of the Week (tPoWs) modeled after the Math Forum's Problems of the Week are constructed-response problems enhanced by virtual manipulatives. We will examine students' solutions that demonstrate a variety of representations used in the problem solving and also the communication of the solutions.

Participants will:
- Experience collaborative problem solving which is designed to build algebraic reasoning.
- Analyze tables, graphs, physical models, computer simulations, symbolic expressions and verbal descriptions and discuss the effectiveness of each representation for various problems.
- Explore the use of different technologies to represent mathematical relationships in various ways.
- Examine samples of teacher and student work done with the Math Forum @ Drexel in its online workshop for teachers that illustrate all of the above activities.
Description: Investigate problem solving that builds algebraic reasoning. We will analyze the effectiveness of tables, graphs, symbols, physical models, computer simulations, and words to represent mathematical relationships for various problems. Together we will explore different technologies to create representations. Samples from the Math Forum's online teacher workshop will illustrate each.
