Douglas Butler - Online Participant
Oundle School, Northamptonshire, UK
Douglas Butler teaches mathematics at Oundle School, an independent coeducational 11-18 boarding school 30 miles west of Cambridge.
Doug is the author of an electronic book from Pearson Publishing (Cambridge), Using the Internet - Mathematics, and of the computer software program Autograph, a suite of interactive programs for teaching secondary mathematics in use in the UK, Australia, and many other countries of the world.
Doug is also the organiser of the TSM (Technology for Secondary and College Mathematics) series of teacher INSET conferences in the UK and abroad (notably South Africa and more recently Prague and Singapore). The most recent TSM day-conference was held at Oundle School 11 May 1998 on "Using the Internet for Mathematics."
Doug is beginning to get involved with the concept of creating online materials for training teachers to use IT in mathematics. If anyone is considering that theme during the Institute week he would be glad to join in. He says this is particularly needed in the developing countries, where there is a serious shortage of qualified mathematics teachers.
Doug will be conducting two training days in the UK early in the week of the Forum Institute, and thinks it might be fun to go online during that time to demonstrate VC techniques. Later in the same week he will be at the MEI Teachers conference in Birmingham and looks forward to some live linking from that site.
