The general equation in this section is y = mx+b

  1. Changing the value of b in cell W6 affects the values in the table. Describe the relationship between the values in the X and Y columns when m is left as 1 and:

      b = 0
      b = 3
      b = -5

  2. Increasing or decreasing the value of b also affects the graph. Describe the change in the graph when m = 1 and:

      b is changed from 0 to 3
      b is changed from 0 to 1/2
      b is changed from 0 to -6

  3. Find the y-intercept for each of the following:

      y = 3x+2
      y = -2x+5
      y = x-8

  4. In the equation y = mx+b, m affects the steepness and direction of the line. What does b control?

  5. Write the equation of a line:

      with slope 4 and y-intercept 2
      with slope -6 and y-intercept 6
      with slope 0 and y-intercept -1
      with slope 2/3 and y-intercept 0
