Cathi Sanders - Online Participant

E-mail: csanders@punahou.edu
Punahou School, Honolulu, Hawaii

Cathi Sanders teaches geometry at Punahou School in Honolulu, HI. She uses technology extensively, in the form of both the Geometer's Sketchpad and Internet resources. Her Sketchpad Tessellation Tutorial and examples of her students' work using Sketchpad are on the Math Forum site linked to Suzanne Alejandre's Tessellation Tutorials.

Cathi finds the Geometer's Sketchpad to be a medium through which her students can explore interactively, discover the properties of geometric figures, and literally create geometry for themselves. In order to teach them how to use the software, she has created a variety of activities that integrate learning computer skills with learning the geometry. She says she does this for two reasons: "1) I don't have time to simply take a week just to teach them how to use the software, and 2) even if I did have the time, I would not want to teach the computer skills independent of the geometry."

Cathi has a number of ideas for teaching tangrams, which she thinks are in themselves an attractive and interesting activity. Her Tangrams Projects help her students to learn and to apply the transformation abilities of the GSP software. In doing these activities, the students learn, practice, and apply rotations, translations and reflections. She plans to create a GSP activity in which the students can construct their own tangrams pieces, using the dilations in GSP as well as rotation, reflection and translation.

In addition to her high school classes at Punahou, Cathi offers a distance learning course, Connecting Geometry, over the Internet. This fully credited high school geometry course for students throughout the Hawaiian islands is part of a grant-funded pilot project through the Hawaii Department of Education. During this E-School (electronic school) course she and her students communicate through the Web page and through e-mail. Of particular interest in this course are the Topics of Study, featuring chapters such as Theorems in Geometry, Congruent Triangles, Triangle Properties, Parallel Lines & Planes, Polygons, Similar Triangles, Circles, and more.

Cathi's hopes for the future include offering a course or informational materials to teachers over the Internet. She has had many years of experience teaching geometry (fundamentals, average, and honors), can offer much experience and expertise with the Geometer's Sketchpad, and enjoys a strong background in applications of geometry: particularly design, art, and architecture as she has a Bachelor's degree in Architecture and a Masters in Math Education. She recently taught a graduate level course, "Geometry for Teachers," at the University of Hawaii. She hopes to share her enthusiasm for Internet applications of geometry not only with students, but in particular with other teachers.
