Reading a Data Chart

Math Forum - USI Lesson Plan

Topic: Exploring Data  
Level: Grades K-4
 
NCTM Mathematics Standards:
  Statistics and Probability

 
Lesson Objectives:
  Students will learn how to read and explain data

They can work in pairs and decide what they want to record

Students will color in a chart to match their data

 
Materials required:
  Students' birthday or weights of students

Ditto sheets

Computer

Spreadsheet Program

 
Description:
  This lesson will do the following:

Discuss the meaning of data

Show what we use a data for

Show what information we can show on a data

 
Procedure:
  For the Teacher: (How to make a Data Chart with a spreadsheet program)

1. You are going to create a spreadsheet chart

2. Enter last,first names into spreadsheet program (Excel)

3. Highlight names with mouse

4. Sort A to Z - ascending, or Z to A - decending

5. Highlight data

6. Choose Chart wizard

7. Select size of chart by dragging mouse

8. Follow directions (choose chart size) to construct the chart.

9. Change scale to beginning to end ( example to Jan. 1 - Dec. 31)

10. Follow direction - bottom of screen

11. Print out chart

For the Students:

1. Students observe teacher making chart on computer/chalkboard.

2. In groups of your choosing, students will pick data to use in this lesson. It can be anything they are interested in.

3. Students will color in the blank chart rectangles/bars to match whatever data they pick.

4. Explain the chart they make. This depends on the data. An example would be, what is the greatest or least from the chart.
