Math Forum - USI Lesson Plan

Topic: Pascal's Triangle
Level: Grades 5-8

NCTM Mathematics Standards:

Patterns and Functions

Lesson Objectives:
To be able to see and compare the patterns in different multiples

Materials required:
  Pascal's Triangle: Discovering Patterns Worksheet
Crayons
Pencil
Multiplication Chart
Overhead projector
Overhead Projector pens
Acetates
Calculator
Learning log (optional)

Description:
Using Pascal's Triangle, identify and color in the multiples of given numbers. Use a different colored crayon for each given number.

Procedure:

  1. Review use of multiplication chart
  2. Review definition of multiples and do some examples on the blackboard
  3. Display Pascal's Triangle on overhead projector
  4. Distribute supplies
  5. Together, color in the multiples of one given number
  6. Look for the patterns in the multiples
  7. Working in groups, color in the multiples of a given number (each group is given a different given number)
  8. Check multiplication chart for accuracy
  9. Transfer pattern to acetate
  10. Using the learning log, describe the pattern drawn
  11. Using the overhead projector, display each group's pattern
  12. Placing one acetate on top of the other, compare patterns
  13. Using the learning log, describe your findings
