Math Forum - USI Lesson Plan

Topic: Pascal's Triangle
Grades 9-12:

NCTM Mathematics Standards:

Mathematics as Connections

Lesson Objectives:
The play the Chaos Game and exhibit good manners.

Materials required:
hard copies of equilateral triangles, rulers, and six-sided dice.

Description:
Students will, either in class or at home, generate X points in the Chaos Game (x being somewhere around 30-40). Then we'll combine them and get a version of it with even more samples.

Procedure:
Everyone does 40 points on their triangle following these rules: 1. Pick a random point in the triangle. Label the vertices of your triangle 1, 2 and 3. 2. Roll the dice. If it's 1 or 4, use vertex 1, etc. 3. Use the ruler to find the midpoint of the segment between your point and the vertex selected by the dice. This is your new point. Go back to step 2. Then the teacher will transfer these onto overheads, and combine them together to show the mystery figure.
