Bargain or boondoggle? Students scoop CD clubs

Take five CDs for a dollar! Get ten videos for a penny! These sound like super deals. But are they?
Students at Blair School are trying to find out..
"We're investigating different kinds of mail-order clubs that kids might join," says Mark Wilson, a fourth grader at the school.."
Third-grader Melissa Davis is collecting CD club ads from magazines and newspapers.

That is a sample of the reporting done in the "news article" included in Roberta's packet of materials. In the article students also reported that:

  • "You must read the fine print carefully."
  • "Most clubs hook you with an offer that sounds too good to be true."
  • "After your first shipment, you pay higher "regular" club prices for each CD you buy."
  • "Most clubs have a rule about the minimum number of CDs you must buy."
  • Shipping charges can raise club costs above store prices.
The article ended with a pledge to report more findings in the next issue of the school paper.
The article leads in to a class discussion and students are sent off to investigate and write their reports.
