MathWorld
is dedicated to helping educators and parents motivate their middle-school students
to solve open-ended word problems, communicate mathematically, and share cultural
and geographical information.
MathWorld
Interactive began as a popular on-line project on the K-12 FidoNet System under
the name MathMagic FidoNet in 1991. The response was overwhelming
and had participants from all corners of the world. MathWorld
was introduced on America On-Line in 1996 in the Electronic Schoolhouse
(keyword ESH) where it flourished along with many other outstanding educational
projects. So many requests were received for internet access
to MathWorld Interactive that the MathWorld Interactive Website was created
in November, 1997 to allow students from all over the world to join in the fun.
In 2002, the project is starting in July with a new focus on students approximately
aged 12-15 in middle grades 6-8.
MathWorld Interactive creator, Carol Mortensen, is available to help
out in any way. Members receive as much or as little support as needed
while participating. If you have a question about lesson plans, how to
handle a one-computer classroom and the project, getting administrative support,
ideas to motivate the students, finding a MathWorld Interactive Partner, or
just want to share the excitement, Carol is available through e-mail to share
her ideas gathered through 11 years of on-line project experience in the math
classroom.
