HOW IT WORKS

The challenges are created for the 6-8 grade level.

Participating students complete a Challenge cycle.  A challenge is posted every nine weeks to the website. Students and educators may visit the website and print out the challenge at any time during the nine-week cycle. Challenge posting dates will be available at the website.

Students submit their solution(s) to the challenge question following the MathWorld Interactive problem-solving steps described in the next bullet. The solutions may be emailed to MathWorld Interactive Problem Submission or entered in the MathWorld Challenge Solution Submission Form.

Challenge solutions must be submitted following  a specific problem-solving format:

  1. Write what you know about the problem (the facts)
  2. Write what you are looking for in the problem (the question(s))
  3. Write ALL of your strategies (Everything you do to try to solve the problem).
  4. Write your solutions (the answer(s)).
  5. Explain how you checked your work.  (Be sure it's correct.)
  6. Extend the problem by writing a new problem based on the original.  (This is so much fun and really adds to the discussions.

Once participants complete their work, MathWorld Interactive educators will read each and every response. One entry will be chosen as the SWEEPSTAKES winner and will be posted at the website and an email certificate will be issued. Every entry will receive an award. All other awards will be announced at the website highlighting strengths and achievements. The awards are posted approximately three weeks after the nine-week MathWorld Challenge cycle ends. The results are also posted in the MathWorld Interactive Hall of Fame on-line so the students receive international recognition.
