Golden rectangles
A rectangle with side ratio 1: is called the golden rectangle. It was thought to be the most visually pleasing proportion and, hence, often used in the classic paintings and architecture. Figure 2 presents the front view of the ancient temple Parthenon in Athens (fifth century BC). The top frame has the golden ratio 1: , as it was originally constructed. The middle frame of figure 2 has the side ratio 1: 6/4, which corresponds to the 4"x6" color print format. Lastly, the bottom frame of figure 2 has the side ratio 1: 5/3.5 ( 1.43). This is the nominal 3"x5" color print
format, which actually measures 3.5"x5". Note that the color print formats are taller than the golden rectangle in figure 2. We leave it to the students to discuss the aesthetic virtues of side ratio, also called aspect ratio.
