Announcing a new newsgroup: geometry.software.dynamic

Many school and college teachers are experimenting with new "dynamic geometry" software such as The Geometer's Sketchpad and Cabri Geometre, and would like to find others with whom to discuss its use in classes and research.

We offer demo versions of Sketchpad and Cabri for Mac and Windows, and in response to requests for a forum for discussion, we've now formed a new newsgroup: geometry.software.dynamic. You can subscribe to it as a mailing list, and your news server should also carry it -- tell us if it doesn't, or call us for full information on subscribing.

With the growth of the World Wide Web and browsers like Mosaic, MacWeb, and WinWeb, we look forward to more articles with graphics and URLs for enhanced math communication and easy downloading of diagrams and sketches.

We expect a high level of participation from the start, including contributions from Nick Jackiw, architect of The Geometer's Sketchpad, Jean-Marie Laborde, who developed Cabri Geometre, Jim King at the University of Washington, who is writing a book on dynamic geometry for the Mathematical Association of America, Doris Schattschneider of Moravian College, who was involved in the development of Sketchpad, and Paul Goldenberg at Educational Development Corporation, who claims there's a whole new area of geometry that has been spawned by this software, and will probably tell us about it when he gets a minute. Join us on a new and exciting newsgroup.

The Geometry Forum is funded by the National Science Foundation. Forum Outposts is produced quarterly by The Geometry Forum in an effort to keep teachers, students, and others in touch with electronic happenings on the Forum and in the world of geometry.
