PROJECT TITLE: Dragonwings Project/World Folktales.

PROJECT DATES: 22 September 1998 - 26 January 1999.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES: The learner read or reviewed folk tales from around the world, plotted the countries of origin, wrote and published a student-created folk tale, designed dragons, built and flew kites, and completed other projects and extra credit opportunities. Selected student dragon designs were then scanned and added to an internet page.

DISCIPLINE INVOLVEMENT:
  • LANGUAGE ARTS: The learner was introduced to readings of and from numerous folk tales from around the world, to include utilization of the internet; used the writing process in creating and illustrating an imaginative folk tale reflecting either a creative explanation for natural phenomena or a morality teaching; then completed the tale for publication using a "bare book." The learner plotted the countries of origin, the titles, and the type of folktale keyed on a world map.

  • MATHEMATICS: The learner designed a dragon based on the reading of a passage in Dragonwings. Selected dragon heads from those drawings were used to learn how to enlarge by a certain scale factor, were scanned, and installed on an internet page.

  • SCIENCE: The learner was introduced to aerodynamics through the use of projects and graphing distances using different objects and shapes. Accurate data was obtained and entered to determine which object and shapes were the most aerodynamic.

  • SOCIAL SCIENCE: The learner was introduced to readings of and from over fifty folk tales from around the world, to include utilization of the internet; used the writing process in creating and illustrating an imaginative folk tale reflecting either a creative explanation for natural phenomena or a morality teaching; then completed the tale for publication using a "bare book." Students built kites in cooperative groups as an extension of reading Dragonwings.

  • RSP: Support was provided both RSP and general education students in the reading, writing, and illustration of completed folk tales, and identical opportunities reflected in the above academic areas were provided to all students.

  • TECHNOLOGY: The internet was used during the research process to reinforce the readings of diverse folk tales. Links had been created for this purpose and both the library and classroom internet access was utilized. Selected dragon designs were used to learn how to enlarge by a certain scale factor, were scanned, and installed on an internet page.
