My Experience with the Multicultural Math Fair
On November 4 through 5 I went to the Multicultural Math Fair. In my
opinion the Multicultural Math Fair was really fun. I learned a lot about
math in many different cultures. Though I only visited 5 out of 9 stations,
I think I still got a good feel for the different types of math from the
cultures. If math is as fun as the Multicultural Math Fair every day, then
I'd say that math is my favorite subject. However, math isn't like that all
the time and it isn't that fun, but it is okay in some ways. In conclusion,
I thought the Multicultural Math Fair was great and I'd give it two thumbs
up. You should encourage your math teacher to take you there for its great
experiences.

Mi experiencia con la feria multicultural de matemáticas
El 4 y 5 de noviembre fuí a la Feria Multicultural de Matemáticas. En mi
opinión, la Feria Multicultural de Matemáticas era muy divertido.
Aprendí mucho sobre las matemáticas de varias culturas diferentes. Aunque
solo visité 5 de las 9 estaciones, sin embargo creo que aprendí bastante de
los diferentes tipos de matemáticas de las varias culturas. Si las
matemáticas son tan divertidas todos los días como en la Feria
Multicultural de Matemáticas, entonces yo diría que matemáticas es mi
materia favorita. En conclusión, pienso que la Feria Multicultural de
Matemáticas era muy buena y la daría dos vivas. Deberías de animar a tu maestro de matemáticas para que te lleve allí por sus grandes
experiencias.

I really enjoyed the math fair. I enjoyed it because I learned new things
and I got closer to my friends. I learned how to make a pyramid out of
paper and tape. I also learned a lot of new facts from Egypt. In the third
station, I learned geographical facts about the earth. I learned how to do
Mayan Math.

Me gustó mucho la feria de matemáticas. Me gustó porque aprendí cosas
nuevas y me acerqué más a mis amigos. Aprendí como hacer una pirámide de
papel y cinta. También aprendí muchas cosas nuevas sobre el Egipto. En la
tercera estación, aprendí hechos geográficos sobre la tierra. Aprendí como
hacer matemáticas al estilo maya.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) eighth grade went to a
Multicultural Fair for Math in the mini-auditorium. Station two was the
most fun. We got to take a test and I almost got them all right. The
hardest station we went to was called 'Towers of Hanoi'. We had to stack
these wooden plates together and make it so they wouldn't overlap. We had a lot of fun and we learned a lot at the Fair. We learned about Mexican math and it was neat to me.

El grupo AVID (Adelantamiento Vía Determinación Individual) del octavo grado asistió a la Feria Multicultural de Matemáticas en el mini-auditorio. La segunda estación era la más divertida. Salí con todo casi correcto de la prueba. La estación más dura a la que asistimos se llamaba 'Towers
of Hanoi' (Torres de Hanoi). Tuvimos que apilar unos platos de madera de manera que no se extendieran uno sobre otro. Nos divertimos
mucho y aprendimos mucho en la Feria. Aprendimos algo de las matemáticas
mejicanas y eso me pareció suave.

In the Multicultural Math Fair I learned that there are many different
kinds of math. I learned symmetry using a mirror and tracing the
reflections. I also learned how the Mayans did math and what they used to
represent numbers. I learned how to measure using a measuring tape and how
to measure around and at the bottom. I learned how to make Indian patterns
on paper. I learned how to make a paper pyramid, and last but not least, I
learned how to tell time in other countries using a map. Those are the
things I learned at the Fair.

En la Feria Multicultural de Matemáticas aprendí que hay varios tipos de
matemáticas. Aprendí algo sobre la simetría usando un espejo y trazando los
reflejos. También aprendí como los mayas hacían matemáticas y lo que usaban
para representar números. Aprendí como medir usando la cinta de medidas, y
como medir alrededor y abajo. Aprendí a hacer ejemplares indígenas en
papel. Aprendí a hacer una pirámide de papel, y por último, pero no menos
importante, aprendí como leer la hora en otros países usando un mapa. Estas
son las cosas que aprendí en la Feria.

When we were in the mini-auditorium we learned how to work on the
computers and work well in groups. We worked with all different kinds of
math games. We worked with shapes and sizes and we measured different
objects. It was really fun. We had to learn how to start projects without getting instructions
from a teacher. We just had to figure out how to do it on our own. We
learned how to work with shapes on the computer. We measured items and then
divided by a different number. We had to work together in groups to
understand the work that we had to do. It made us use our brain and we
worked hard. That is what we learned and did.

Cuando estábamos en el mini-auditorio, aprendimos a trabajar en
las computadoras y trabajar bién en grupos. Trabajamos con diferentes
juegos de matemáticas. Trabajamos con figuras y tamaños y medimos
diferentes objetos. Era muy divertido. Tuvimos que aprender a empezar proyectos sin recibir
instrucciones del maestro. Simplemente tuvimos que figurar como hacerlo solos. Aprendimos a trabajar con figuras en la computadora.
Medimos objetos y luego los dividimos por diferentes números. Tuvimos que
trabajar juntos en grupos para comprender el trabajo que ten&lgrave;amos que
hacer. Estuvimos obligados a usar nuestras mentes y trabajamos duro. Eso
fué lo que aprendimos e hicimos.

The Math Fair was very educational. My experience at the Fair taught me
many things. At the Fair there were a lot of computers with educational
facts. My group and I went to five different stations. At the first station
we made pyramids out of paper. At the second station we worked on the
computers and we learned about the Egyptian Kings. At the third station we
had to work on locating places on the map. At the fourth station we had a
yellow paper that we had to shade in a box each time we solved a problem.
At the last station, which was the fifth station, we had to figure out a
puzzle that was somewhat difficult. We had to move around pieces,
putting a large piece on top. At the Math Fair I had fun and I also learned
a lot from each station.

La Feria de Matemáticas fué muy educacional. Mi experiencia en la Feria me
enseñó muchas cosas. En la Feria había muchas computadoras con hechos
educacionales. Mi grupo y yo fuimos a cinco estaciones diferentes. En la
primera estación, hicimos pirámides de papel. En la segunda estación
trabajamos con computadoras y aprendimos hechos de los Reyes Egipcios. En la
tercera estación, tuvimos que trabajar en localizar lugares en el mapa. En
la cuarta estación, teníamos un papel amarillo en el cual tuvimos que
oscurecer una cajilla cada vez que resolvimos un problema. En la última
estación, la quinta, tuvimos que resolver un enigma
que era algo difícil. Tuvimos que mover pedazos de un lado a otro, poniendo
encima un pedazo grande. Me divertí en la Feria de Matemáticas y también
aprendí mucho de cada estación.
