Davide Cervone has mercifully pointed out that, at least with Netscape,
"if there are animated GIFs on the page, you can always press the STOP button (after the entire page is loaded) and they will stop animating (much to everyone's relief). The MTV generation has really screwed things up for the rest of us!"
Davide goes on to suggest interesting business possibilities:
"I've been thinking that there is a new product here somewhere: a browser that removes animated GIFs from the page and strips out the advertisements. Then there would be a war between these browser manufacturers and the page-writers to hide their advertisements, and so the browser manufacturers would be able to sell updates, etc. A whole new industry could be created for this!"
