An "L" shaped one story house has an area of 2400 sq. ft. and an exposed perimeter of 226 linear feet. What will be the difference in outside wall area if the architect decides instead to plan a two story rectangular house with a length-to-width ratio of 1.5:1?From Eq. 1, k = 66% for the one story house. From Eq. 4b, k for the two story house is 86.83% per floor and 61.4% for both floors [Eq 2]. From Eq. 1a, with an area of 2400 square feet, the perimeter length of the two story house will 282.84 ft.
Assuming a 9-foot overall height for the outside walls, the two story house will have 512 square feet more outside wall surface than the one story house. The two-story house will half the roof and foundation area (and half the land coverage) of the one story house with the opportunity for more window area, i.e., more sunshine, daylight, air, and view.
