Rug
Iran (Shahsavan)
19th century

L1996.46.1
Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Wendel R. Swan
89 x 35.5 inches

The field pattern of this rug shows a tessellation - one shape, that when repeated covers the plane with no gaps and no overlaps. Here, the shape is based upon a rhomboid. Color alternation and color change lends emphasis to the inherent rotational symmetry of this form.

Other symmetries are also evident in the field pattern. Can you identify translation, glide reflection, and reflection?

The border pattern relies upon reflection along both horizontal and vertical axes to form a series of eight-pointed stars.
