I have no desire to see class-time wasted solely for the teacher's gratification, but do you really think that the student's judgement should be the final arbiter of whether something needs proof?! And if so, *which* student?

This is a different matter altogether. Even if the teacher made no case at all, the proof may still have been worth doing.
