German words for "number"

At least two words in the German language translate the English word "number": Zahl and Nummer. Can someone please tell me what is the distinction between them?
I already asked two German professors and consulted a German-English dictionary. They didn't answer the question. So, who better to ask about Zahlen than mathematicians? :)
Thanks for all answers.
