Manipulatives Organization

I find it very easy to organize my manipulatives for the lessons.
Being well organized makes using the manipulatives more valuable.
What I do prior to every lesson that calls for manipulatives is I prep
them prior to the lesson. In preping the materials I use the heavy
ziplock freezer bags (one zips work best). Because I have 28 students
in my class handing out materials can get cumbersome if it is not done
in an organized manner. I usually get a helper from fifth grade or I
do it after school for the next day and I put any materials the
students might need in the ziplock bags. For example if we are
playing roll tens the dot cube, interlocking cubes, and felt square go
right into the bag. To eleviate some of the problems with students
wanting to hand out materials when the students are working in pairs
the person who gets the material bag distributes the materials. The
other person is the clean up person. This has allowed us to focus on
the game and not being the helper. No one now fights over who will
hand out the materials and who will clean up the materials and put
them a way. Last thing, when students begin to get a bit noisy one
thing that I have found that works is that I put on the board "quiet
pairs with share". As soon as my students see that they can get an
opportunity to share they quiet their voices. Hopefully these tips
may help some of you. If you find the ziplock bag tip helpful, buy
them in bulk it's much cheaper.
