I, too, help arrange the groupings for choice time, but not all the
time. When I do the arranging, which is usually to get kids to rotate
through a newly introduced activity, I put the students' pictures at
the table where they will be working. I mix up the groups daily so
that children get the chance to work with different classmates. I try
not to use a timer because I found that while it keeps the groups
moving, some children need more time and are frustrated at having to
switch, while others are faster and need to switch sooner. Other times,
I let children choose the centers, especially As I walk around
observing and talking with children, I let them move to a different
center if they ask and I feel they have done quality work at the
previous center. I do keep track of which centers children have
visited each day by making a note on my weekly center chart. If I
would like a child to visit a center, I make sure he/she is placed
there at least once during the week. I like the idea of the sign in
sheet at the center. I might try that. I would love to hear what
others do during choice time. I always am looking for tips to make it
more productive and less chaotic.
