Thanks for sharing the LA Times article on Chatsworth HS/LAUSD. We are
getting positive test results from Chatsworth that the integrated math
is scoring higher than the traditional classes. One misleading
statement in the article mentioned that three HS were still offering
traditional course...No. Hollywood HS, according to Newsweek ranked in
the top 100 HS...eleventh, is only offering only integrated
mathematics. They are also offering integrated science.
Our agenda in Los Angeles is to level the playing field. This year we
have many more students taking college preparatory math, in fact we have
more students in integrated math than the traditional. We approach the
integrated math as one comprehensive three-year course instead of three
disjointed one-year courses. Students are expected to take three years
of int math with the teacher taking the students into the second year.
We are also implementing a comprehennsive one three-year course at the
middle school.
One issue is that some high school see the integrated courses as for
remedial students, so they are scheduling the top students in
traditional and the "slower" into int math. We had also eliminated all
remedial HS math courses and inserted a 9th grade placeholder,
Mathematics Investigations. This course will also be eliminated in
couple of years. Another issue is the lack of qualified math teachers.
If we offer only college preparatory high school math courses, who will
teach them? By eliminating the remedial math courses, many of the
cross-over teachers will not be able to teach math.
