It's interesting that your friend is in chemistry--a book just
appeared that deals with applications of topology in chemistry:

Erica Flapan, "When Topology Meets Chemistry: An Introduction
to Molecular and Topological Chirality", Cambridge University
Press, 2000, 250 pages.

A search at using the words 'topology' and 'chemistry'
gave me about 36,900 hits, including these:

Crystallographic Topology 101

Topological Crystal Chemistry

R. Bruce King and D.H. Rouvray, "Graph Theory and Topology
in Chemistry", Studies in Physical and Theoretical Chemistry 51,

Aurora Costales Castro, "Topology of the electron density
in crystals. A quantum theory of chemical bond" (Spanish),
Ph.D. Thesis (Universidad de Oviedo), 1998, 382 pages.
