First a correction. I meant: Through his efforts, Vladimir is doing more to raise the quality of Maple and Mathematica products than anyone outside of these companies that I know of ...
Why would you know of such people? Someone who has a deep understanding of these programs and discusses problems and solutions with the developers need not post the discussion on these newsgroups. I assure you that such discussions happen, e.g. at the Maplesoft annual retreat. Or on moderated mailing lists. Or through consulting arrangements and sabbatical visits. It is unfortunate that you seem to think that developers depend for their "quality" on the random repetitive potshots from VB.
We simply disagree rjf. You may be in awe of "Someone who has a deep understanding of these programs and discusses problems and solutions with the developers" but that doesn't mean that they report more bugs or any for that matter. Yes, they need not post the discussion on the newsgroups but it would be much more efficient if they did. If they posted the bugs they find, that would take up less of the developers time which is a very valuable resource. While you are obviously trying to impress people with the suggestion that important behind the sciene discussions are going on, for myself I am only impressed that developers at Maple take the time to give these prima donnas the special attention that they want. A more professional and business like situation would be for Maple to have a website where the user reports bugs and then Maple posts the priority and status of the problem and action taken/anticipitated. There is nothing that needs to be hidden here. And if you are referring to yourself as "Someone who has a deep understanding of these programs and discusses problems and solutions with the developers" please stop wasting their valuable time that could be put to better use fixing bugs.
