In principle, principles make a difference, in practice they may not.

Mathematics is all about principles, so principles make a difference in
mathematics and cannot be ignored in mathematics, because without them
there is no mathematics.

In practice, one will often ignore these principles, but only at the
risk of making an ass of oneself. This is why engineering is still a bit
experimental.
