For once, I actually agree with Williams. After all, Goedel -- the mathematician quoted above -- showed that the Continuum Hypothesis is consistent with ZFC, yet he did not actually prove CH at all. (And he himself believed that the cardinality of the continuum was aleph_2 -- and this in spite of his proof that "c=aleph_1" is consistent with ZFC.)
