For sure the first step is to read, read, reed. I spent six months on one history of math topic before an aspect of the topic was selected (by chance).

Mentors have popped in and out of my math studies over the years; hence, take your time. Read, read and read. A mentor will show up at the proper time and place.

The important thing is the follow your love of the history of math. There are many areas that need to be updated.

My point of view freshly translates ancient texts from several cultures and math threads. Your point of view may take off in a number of alternate directions.
