To use a slightly different analogy: you sound like someone with a Ph.D. at doing arithmetic using 'Roman numerals' when that person is confronted by the 'placeholder method' of doing arithmetic.
(To make it abundantly clear without benefit of analogy: there is generally some fear of losing lucrative employment behind such claimed non-comprehension).
