Why, indeed??

(That is, why make reform of the educational system so complicated? This has been a task that has been hanging fire for years and years - with zero progress being seen despite the crucial importance of our educational systems in society).

May I suggest that the reform of your (US), our (Indian) and other educational systems around the world is complicated mainly because of a concatenation of the following:

- -- The fact that the *stakeholders* in the system do not have a simple, readily accessible, productive and fruitful process to reform ANY system, and in particular to reform the 'educational system' (or systems). [Reform of our educational systems is crucial to enable us reform most other systems].

*The stakeholders in the educational system are, broadly, as follows:

Teachers; students; parents; administrators in the system; educational experts; politicians; others interested in contributing to the 'reform process'.

Currently, the processes in use enable only an empowered few of the interested stakeholders to put forth their ideas into the system. Other stakeholders are rebuffed.

- -- Stakeholders are NOT enabled to *integrate* their many good ideas to improve/reform the system so that those ideas are actually implemented;

- -- Stakeholders have no way of throwing out the many bad ideas that always float around in our societal systems. In particular, some bad ideas (relative to the educational system) that I've seen floating around here at Math-teach are:

i) "PUT THE EDUCATIONAL MAFIA IN JAIL!" (Haim, who is alas no longer with us these days);

ii) "BLOW UP THE SCHOOLS OF EDUCATION!" (Wayne Bishop, who has apparently taken up as his own this foolish slogan from Reid Lyon [Reading Research Expert];

iii) "Children must be PUSHED (or GOADED) to learn math (Robert Hansen).

Such bad ideas (and the mindsets that develop from those bad ideas) prevent any effective discussion of the many good ideas - and also prevent the implementation of the many good ideas.

I draw the attention of those actually interested in working for the development of effective educational systems to the powerful insights into systems science pioneered by the late John N. Warfield. More information about Warfield's insights into systems is available from http://www.jnwarfield.com and from the "John N. Warfield Collection" held at the library of George Mason University (Fairfax, VA-USA), where Warfield was Professor Emeritus - see http://ead.lib.virginia.edu/vivaxtf/view?docId=gmu/vifgm00008.xml .

Some developments from Warfield's contributions to systems science now enable any individual (high-school upwards) or group to apply his approach to systems to any 'Mission' of current interest - e.g., "To develop an effective educational system for our needs"; "To motivate my students to get over the fear and loathing of math that is all too common in students at school and early college levels". The OPMS approach would help ensure that all interested stakeholders in any system would always be able to contribute their good ideas - and to help them get rid of the bad ideas that may be floating around.

These developments are contained in a systems aid to problem solving and decision making called the 'One Page Management System' (OPMS). More information about the OPMS is available directly from the undersigned at gs (underscore) chandy (at) yahoo (dot) com.

If, on studying this information, you feel you wish to try out the OPMS on any Mission of current interest to you, I shall be happy to make freely available my prototype OPMS software and also to initiate you into applying it to your Mission. The software will help you to do the modeling that is a part of creating an Action Plan, and I shall provide (limited; but also free) help with the interpretation of the models that you may construct. (Interpretation of these models and acting on them is quite tricky for beginners).

Robert Hansen (RH) may at this point claim that I will "solicit funds" from you for the above. This is an utterly false claim that RH often makes, for some strange reasons of his own.

(I am, in fact, seeking sizable 'venture/angel financing' for the further development and marketing of the OPMS concept and software - but the OPMS software and limited guidance will ALWAYS be freely available to those interested in applying the powerful OPMS concepts to their worthwhile and productive Missions. I do charge commercial organisations for the professional services they may seek from me).
