Subject: Re: Roman arithmetic
A few very brief remarks on Roman computation.
1. Menninger has some remarks on the abacus and mentions 2 extant
examples of which one is illustrated.
2. Algorithms that *could* be applied to Roman numerals are given
in: (a) Archive, Vol 15 (1975)
and (b) Monthly, Vol 88 (1981).
3. I have seen other such articles -- a long time ago. However when
I tried to trace them I drew a blank.
4. It is not difficult to derive other algorithms and computation is
not hard once one practices.
