I too received an abacus when I started first grade.  It was the year after Sputnik went up and everyone was thinking of ways to make us stronger math students.  I still have my original abacus.  When I was teaching students who wanted to be elementary teachers, I had them build and learn how to use an abacus similar to mine.  I believe they were made in Wisconsin.
