Here's a link to an interesting Scientific American piece on how students and faculty at Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design (R.I.S.D.) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are seeking to add an 'A' to STEM: "Students Combine Arts and Science While Exploring 'Transhumanism'" - http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/students-combine-art-and-science-while-exploring-transhumanism-slide-show1/

I've only glanced at some of the slides accompanying the piece. Based on whatever I've seen, I'd suggest that these are early attempts towards a real perceived need in society: there's a LONG way to go to reach some kind of *integration* that is both 'effective' and 'usable'.
